About:
The Student-Athlete Affairs program is committed to engaging student-athletes in service, promoting fellowship in the types of projects it undertakes, while teaching its student-athletes leadership and responsibility. Student-athletes are given opportunities to develop the foundation for a lifelong commitment to service.
FGCU’s student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and throughout the community. This past fall, the Eagles’ student-athletes achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.28, surpassing that of the overall student body (2.98) for the 11th consecutive semester. The Eagles have also contributed nearly 30,000 hours of community service the past six years as part of enhanced efforts within the department’s NCAA Life Skills initiatives.
In January, members of FGCU Softball team lent their efforts towards a home renovation for Habitat for Humanity (read about it here). This September, led by 13th-year head coach David Deiros, the 2014-15 softball squad displayed its diverse skill set by serving at separate sites for different causes on two consecutive weekends.
During the 2014 Holiday Season … the FGCU women’s golf team spent time this week donating time to two local organizations. The team volunteered with the Salvation Army for the third-straight season and helped with a local golf event for children.
The Eagles contributed their time to the Salvation Army last Friday, where they sorted and prepared donated food that would be distributed for the holiday season.
“Being able to help out the Salvation Army is always a rewarding experience,” explained head coach Sarah Trew. “We sometimes forget just how fortunate we are. There are so many people in need and we are proud to lend a hand in a small way. It truly warms your heart to walk in and see how many people have donated food and toys.”
The entire team was present to help The Salvation Army prepare for the busy holiday season. FGCU is now represented among the nearly four million volunteers that enable The Salvation Army to serve over 58 million meals each year.
“We were really happy to help out at the Salvation Army again this year,” said senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School). “They receive a tremendous amount of donations during the holidays and we were glad that we could help sort through them so they were ready for when families came to collect for Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
The Salvation Army began in 1891 with an initiative to serve Christmas dinner to the less fortunate residents of the Sacramento area. The idea has since spread world-wide. The well-known red kettles around Thanksgiving and Christmas help make it possible for The Salvation Army to do the most good possible for 30 million people each year.
The following day, the team volunteered at the Junior Tee at the CME Titleholders course. In conjunction with CME Titleholders, the event hosted a clinic for boys and girls of all ages. The team and Coach Trew joined instructors from around the area to teach full swing, short gamee and putting.
Following the clinic, players from the Symetra Tour spoke to the clinc participants.
“We had so much fun volunteering at Tiburon!” continued Price. “The First Tee and other junior golf organizations are so important to the growth of the game and it’s vital that as collegiate golfers we serve as role models for young kids. We taught them ways to practice and why they should respect the game. It was clear that we had an impact on them and it felt amazing!”
