About:
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford University athletic department and student-athletes from all of its athletic programs kicked off the new school year by volunteering throughout the community recently. The Regents spent the entire day helping a trio of local nonprofit organizations, The Rockford Rescue Mission, Ethnic Heritage Museum and the Northern Illinois Food Bank, with various tasks. Some of the volunteer work the Regents participated in included: distributing food, yardwork and cleaning and organizing the pantry freezer.
“The culture of our student-athletes is becoming more service-oriented,” Director of Athletics Jason Mulligan stated. “We have so many different opportunities to give back and our teams and coaches have really embraced it. Each activity we do impacts us as much as it impacts the people we are helping. It is great to be able to serve and give back to the community.”
“I love doing community service because it’s a great way for me to just stop and think about others,” RU women’s volleyball player Brynn Atwell stated. “Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in school and sports, but one thing I have always enjoyed is helping others. I love communicating and learning about others people, and enjoy being able to have a positive impact during difficult times.”
“I really enjoyed the time with my teammates and coaches helping organize the food in the freezers at the Rockford Rescue Mission,” RU men’s basketball player Sincere Galbreath commented. “The staff there was very nice and welcoming and made us feel right at home. This opportunity gave all of us a chance to bond over something besides our sport or class, which was nice. I am thankful for the chance to help out and am looking forward to the next opportunity.”
