About:
The mission of SEMO athletics is to provide a first-class student athlete centered collegiate experience. The mission is driven by three core values: academic excellence, social development, and competitive success.
When AD Mark Alnutt came to SEMO, 62 percent of student athletes had a 3.0 GPA or higher. Now the figure is 70 percent. “We have good kids that get it and understand that they have God-given ability to play beyond their high school years. They also know eduction is key,” said Alnutt , who also was proud that 41 student athletes graduated this semester.
AD Mark Alnutt talked about the department’s core values at the Kennett Country Club May 20. Those core values are academic excellence, social development, and competitive success.
The second core value is social development, centering around community involvement. “It’s a privilege to be a student athlete, not a right,” he said. “When they go to an elementary school or they’re packing food at a food bank, they earn a high sense of appreciation for what they do. They understand the value of helping people.”
SEMO athletes had over 3,000 community service hours this year–about 10 per student athlete.
The third core value is competitive success. “My goal was to be in the top three programs in the Ohio Valley Conference. Last year we achieved that goal. This year we’re going to finish third again, but we scored more points. That tells me we have the sustainability to compete at a high level.”
Alnutt is convinced when the mission is successful, years later those who competed at SEMO still will be connected with the university.
