About:
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University student-athletes committed a total of 12,919 hours of community service during the 2013-14 academic year, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday.
The total hours of community service is almost double the amount of hours served during the 2012-13 academic year. It also surpassed a set goal of 10,000 hours for this year. Student-Athletes spent almost 7,000 hours mentoring students at the Dunbar and Waltersville schools in Bridgeport, while also volunteering at Caroline House and the Hall Neighborhood House in Bridgeport. Select teams participated in events such as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Westport, the Greater New Haven Heart Walk, and the MS Walk in Westport to benefit the National MS Society.
“Every year we set a standard and student-athletes not only answer the call, but amaze me in their selfless commitments to the community” said Lucy Cox, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services. “This year we asked for a contribution of 10,000 hours to honor our 50th year, and not only did we meet the challenge but we soared above and beyond. What is most amazing is we didn’t even have to ask. Our student-athletes want to give back and they came to us with multiple initiatives. I could not be more proud to associate myself with these wonderful student-athletes”.
The Sacred Heart Department of Athletics was honored with its third consecutive NEC Building Communities award in 2013. The award recognizes the institution which demonstrates the highest dedication to making an impact in the community through the efforts of its student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
