About:
Over the past three years, since Coach Teresa Ricci and Assistant Coach Kim Astrologo began leading the Somers Softball program, they have established an important tradition: the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game. This meaningful event brings together the Somers JV and Varsity teams and Harrison High School to honor and support those impacted by breast cancer.
Many student-athletes and coaching staff within the program have been personally affected by the disease, knowing someone who has battled, is currently battling, or has lost their fight with breast cancer. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month is officially recognized in October, Somers Softball chose to hold their awareness game during their spring season. As a female sport, the team sees it as a meaningful opportunity to pay tribute to the fighters, survivors, and those they have lost.
During the game, players from both schools wear pink T-shirts to symbolize their support. Each athlete also writes down the name of a loved one or organization they are honoring, carrying that dedication with them throughout the game. This heartfelt gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the community’s shared strength and solidarity.
Adding to the significance of the event, a member of the community who has been personally affected by breast cancer is invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch, setting a tone of resilience, hope, and unity.
Through this annual tradition, the Somers Softball program continues to raise awareness, inspire action, and honor the enduring spirit of those impacted by breast cancer.
