About:
DANVILLE, Va. – In the spirit of community service and Averett University’s new slogan, “One team, one family, one Averett,” 157 student-athletes volunteered at the Day to Engage sponsored by the Dan River Center for Community Change last week.
Averett student-athletes put in a total of 302 hours working with projects such as the Get Fit Dan River Region Project, the Stonewall Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Center, and the Southern Virginia Mountain Biking Association. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams along with volleyball, softball, football, and women’s basketball also donated time in assisting with God’s Storehouse, Habitat for Humanity, the Dan River Basin Association, the United Way, and Letters to the Troops.
Members of the men’s soccer team participated in the Get Fit Dan River Region project where they helped hand out healthy food to two Danville communities in need of assistance.
Student-athletes from softball, women’s basketball, and football spent time at God’s Storehouse, helping power wash the outside of the building, removing trash, bugs, and spider webs from the outside doors and windows, and cleaning the floors and vents.
Members of the volleyball team helped clean out multiple raised garden boxes on the property of Stonewall Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Center.
Philip Wilson, head coach of Averett men’s soccer, was responsible for organizing student-athlete participation felt good about the event and was excited about the opportunity to give back to the Danville community.
“Day to Engage is a great day to give back to the community,” Wilson said. “To see so many student-athletes and students from the region participate is tremendous.”
Wilson also feels that the event was a great for student-athletes and students to make an impact on the community and to see the appreciation from those they helped.
“Listening to their reflections after the service project is uplifting,” Wilson said. “To hear the team talk about some of the reactions from the children and families in the communities and how grateful they were reminds all of us of the importance of giving back and not taking things for granted.”
