About:
Operation Holiday Basket is a 55 year tradition at Roosevelt High School. We have fed over 16,000 families over winter break by providing and delivering a “basket” of non perishables and a frozen turkey to our students at our school, our feeder schools and our direct community. This year we delivered 301 baskets. Families self identify after we put out our posters, videos and information to their school social workers. We have a large number of repeat families from year to year.
We have 14 OHB Blue Crew leaders who set up fundraising and food drives with area businesses and other schools and help coordinate the delivery of the baskets. A third of our student leaders who help organize and orchestrate this event are athletes from a variety of sports as are the majority of the other 100 volunteers. We raised over $12,000 this year to ensure that Holiday Basket will continue.
It’s an event that our alumni support and come back to help as well as our local grocery store whose owner is an alumni. The grocery store provides turkeys, potatoes and carrots at cost AND deliver them to us!
In total we have over 150 student and alumni volunteers who pack the baskets and then deliver.
