About:
Hempstead, NY – During the first 2 weeks of March, Hofstra student-athletes took part in multiple community service initiatives in and around the local community. More than 50 student-athletes combined on five projects, highlighted by a three-day Reading With Pride event honoring the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Student-athletes took time to visit Jackson Main Elementary (Hempstead), Polk Street School (Franklin Square), Franklin Early Childhood Center (Hewlett) and Chelsea Prep (Manhattan) this past week. They each donned the famous hat from The Cat In The Hat, and read their favorite Dr. Seuss books to children at each school.
Between March 1 and March 7, student-athletes from Hofstra took part in the Second Annual CAA Food Drive Challenge. The event is a contest between each of the Colonial Athletic Association schools to see which one can collect the most pounds of food during the week. Student-athletes volunteered at all home athletic contests as well as at the grocery store on campus, and donated all collected items to the Island Harvest Food Bank.
On Saturday, March 1, nearly 30 brave student-athletes took part in the Town of North Hempstead Polar Plunge, run by the Special Olympics of Long Island. Student-athletes formed a Hofstra team, and raised nearly $1,500 for the event. They joined hundreds of participants at Bar Beach in Port Washington, NY, and made the plunge on a cold, but sunny, Sunday morning.
Student-athletes from the men’s tennis program made a special trip to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on Sunday, March 9, and, along with community members, spent the morning cleaning up the grounds. That same day, members of the Pride women’s lacrosse team came together to clean out their dorm rooms of unused clothing items and brought filled boxes to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.
We would like to send a special thank-you to all of the student-athletes that took the time to volunteer at these events. Hofstra University and the Department of Athletics is very proud of all of the service you are committed to, and the tremendous impact you are making on our community.
