About:
FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2014) – NYIT women’s basketball brought the summer to a close giving back to the community. Freshman Kristen Kelly (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and sophomore Shannon Duer (Islip, N.Y.) spent Wednesday, August 27 aiding PS 244, The Active Learning Elementary School, as they prepared for the start of a new school year.
“It is nice to see these young ladies donate one of their final days of summer to help a school in such need of assistance,” said head coach Anthony Crocitto. “This truly speaks to the character of NYIT.”
Kelly and Duer assisted the PS 244 teachers and staff in organizing and cleaning various classrooms on the school’s campus. The experience resonated with the two Bears and left a lasting impression.
“Being able to see the progress we made from the way the classroom looked when we got there to when we were done was rewarding,” said Kelly. “It was also nice representing not only our basketball team, but NYIT.”
“I was glad I could help and I would have to say it was an eye-opening experience,” said Duer. “It made me more appreciative of all the hard work teachers do.”
Duer, Kelly and the women’s basketball team enter with high hopes as they open up the 2014-2015 season on Friday, Nov. 14 against Pace University at the ECC/NE-10 Challenge hosted by Adelphi. Tip-off is to be announced. For more information visit nyitbears.com
