About:
Our Varsity Boys Basketball team along with our school booster club organized and ran along with our athletic department a wonderful fundraiser for two of our high school students here at Rondout Valley High School who were both sophomores one male and one female. They both suffer from very rare forms of cancer which have put a tremendous strain on both of their families due to high medical costs associated with their treatments. Our boys basketball team and our booster club came together to create a “Box Out $ Cancer Benefit Game” in which all door proceeds as well as donated food and other raffle items were all given to the families after being counted and split evenly.
The evening was a huge success, first we completely sold out as the event was standing room only for the first time in a long time in our gymnasium. Secondly, we raised over 7000 dollars which was then split and each family received over 3500 dollars from the event. Our entire community and school came out to support a great cause and showed just how much a close knit community can do along with great student athlete involvement.
The event was one evening however it took us approximately 6 weeks to organize the event with all donations such as local pizza place and dunking donuts and Stewarts ice cream all which was sold to add to the pool of money to distribute between the two families of the affected students. The actual event was from 4pm until the end of the games that day both a JV and varsity boys basketball game vs Marlboro, we got out of the school by around 11pm that evening. We had overwhelming support from all student-athletes, staff, and community for this event. It was standing room only for the game and even the officials were so moved that they also made a donation at the end of the game. In addition the team we played that day Marlboro is also one of our fiercest rivals and their student-athletes and coaches even donated at the end of the contest as well, it was just a really amazing event and experience for all. In the end, the two families were able to split the money totals that day which were in excess of 7000 dollars to help each family offset all of the travel and medical costs associated with their disease. We plan on doing a community event like this each year moving forward because of the tremendous positive impact it had on all involved.
