About:
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota School of Mines Athletic Dept., and all the Hardrocker scholar athletes pride themselves on being active and giving back to the Rapid City community as a way of saying thank you for the overwhelming support.
As the 2013-14 athletics season come to a close, the Hardrockers have tallied a total of 4,713.50 hours of community service. With 11 active programs, this year’s hours represent the most-ever recorded for Hardrocker scholar athletes.
“We have a great group of athletes at South Dakota School of Mines” said interim Athletic Director Tiffany McCampbell. “The Black Hills area supports us so much. It’s great that all our sports programs are able to give back by volunteering and spending time in our community.”
Hardrocker scholar athletes volunteered to do many activities. From putting on free sports clinics to area youths to helping clean area parks and beautifying the campus.
The ‘Rocker football team logged the most hours with 2,075.5.
“Being a student-athlete at South Dakota Mines is extremely challenging. Not only do they spend so much time at practice or at a game, but they are also at the library or in the classroom studying” McCampbell said. “They don’t have a lot of free time to begin with. For these athletes to volunteer what little time they do have is commendable.”
