Event overview
A member of our youth basketball program recently began treatment for cancer. We, as the girls basketball team, realized that this young girl and her family would be going through some very difficult times. We decided to help by hosting a fundraiser for her family to help ease some of the financial burden.
Our team planned the fundraising event in less than four weeks. We decided to have an event on a Saturday where many girls basketball games were being played. Members of our team promoted the all-day event by hanging up signs throughout the community, as well as promoting it in school and through social media. We, the varsity girls basketball team, created a video using green screen technology to spread awareness about the event and show support for the young basketball player. In planning the event, we choose various activities for fundraising, including: a bake sale, nail and face painting booths, and a basket raffle. Girls basketball players and members of the elementary student council volunteered at the event throughout the day. During our varsity game, all members of our team replaced their shoelaces with gold laces to show support for our young basketball player and promote awareness of childhood cancer (gold is the color of childhood cancer).
We were able to include and work in cooperation with many members and organizations of the community. All members of the modified, junior varsity and varsity girls basketball teams volunteered to help setup and manage the event. The Booster Club, school administration, Willard Mountain and youth basketball program all provided support for the event and worked together with us to make it successful. The elementary student council also joined us in our endeavors, and various community members provided baskets for the basket raffle fundraiser.
The community was incredibly supportive of our effort to help our fellow basketball player. During the basketball games, the gym was absolutely full of community members wearing shirts in support of our elementary student with cancer. The parking lot was completely filled, and the halls were bustling with people. Even the opposing team graciously showed their support by donating a signed basketball to give to the youth player. It was as if the entire community came to the school to show support for the young basketball player.
We raised more than $10,000 in just one day and received additional donations after the event. All of the funds raised were donated to her family. This was a valuable experience for our team because we were able to come together and engage the larger community to help a young student in need. We hope the money we raised will ease some of the financial burden on her family. Perhaps even more importantly, we hope that the support we have shown, and will continue to show, will help encourage her to fight during this challenging time.
