About:
As part of the requirement for participating in athletics, all teams must complete a community service project each sports season. This winter season, our varsity and junior varsity team members decided to collaborate on one large community service project. They chose to support the More than a Game Foundation’s Hoops for Hospitals, which benefits local hospitals in our area: Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and Upstate Cancer Center. Additionally, the teams organized a fundraising effort for our high school art teacher battling Stage 4 cancer. They created the #SarahStrong campaign to support the teacher who significantly impacted their lives.
the teams organized a bottle drive on a Saturday. They then hosted two basketball games, during which each team collected donations at the door, sold 50/50 raffle tickets, offered Chuck-A-Ducks, and managed the concession stand, with all proceeds going to this cause. Each student-athlete also reached out to solicit monetary donations.
This community service event helped raise almost $6,500 to fight cancer and support a teacher in our district. It also fostered a sense of community, working together for a great cause.
