About:

This is an activity which was done by the Lindenhurst Middle School Physical Education Department, which was spearheaded by Dave Carlson, MS PE Teacher and Varsity Boys X/C, Winter and Spring Track Coach.
I cannot think of a more noble and lifegiving activity than this, which he and the other members of the Lindenhurst MS PE department put together with our entire MS student body.
This is certainly something I want to pass along for the NYSPHSAA Community Service Challenge.

______________________
From the very beginning of this school year it was clear many of our students and families were struggling with not only COVID-19 but the financial slow down the virus has caused. The Lindenhurst Middle School Physical Education Department decided to act.
The “LMS Students Go the Extra Mile” fundraiser asked each student to donate $10. All students who donated $10 would receive an event T shirt. In addition, local businesses were asked to sponsor the event. All sponsors who donated $100 of more had their company logo printed on the back of the shirt and posted on social media with our event.
Over about 1 month almost 200 students brought donations. Teachers and administrators also added to the donations. Shirts were distributed and the event was planned.
On November 1, 2020  all participants were given the option to either meet at the George D. Smawley Memorial Track between 9-11am to walk/run 1 mile,  or do their activity (mile) remotely anywhere/anytime they chose. A wide variety of activities were chosen. Social Media was used to bring all the participation together. Students, Parents, Admins all uploaded and posted 100’s of pictures and well wishes.
The day was a huge success! Over $2700 was raised, and a meaningful feeling of community was felt by everyone involved. The LMS social work department plans on using the money to give local families gift cards to grocery stores, Target and gas stations. Our hope is that those families also see the pictures and posts as well and know how much we care. We hope the message is loud and clear. Lindenhurst is a great community that ALWAYS supports people in need.
“On Nov. 1, the Lindenhurst Middle School physical education department welcomed many students, staff and community members who took part in the “LMS Students Go the Extra Mile” fundraiser virtual run/walk. Participants were asked to make a monetary donation and then walk at least one mile in support of the cause either remotely or physically at the middle track.

“We wanted our students to do something that would not only get their bodies moving, but would also help some of our local families get through these difficult times,” said Maureen Sconone, Lindenhurst Middle School physical education teacher.

On the day of the event there was a wonderful turn out and coupled with those who chose to walk remotely, the department was able to raise approximately $2,700 to benefit members of the community who have been experiencing difficulty.
