About:
The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators recognized the Albion College athletic department for the impressive community service projects completed by Briton student-athletes during the 2013-2014 academic year. Albion was recognized in three categories during the NADIIIAA/Jostens Community Service Awards presentation Jan. 17 at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Convention.
Albion received the award of merit in the array of projects and on-going projects categories. Led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Briton student-athletes logged 3,375 hours on a wide variety of service projects, ranging from putting on the annual winter carnival and free sports clinics for children to participating events like the College’s Halloween Spooktacular and the Student Volunteer Bureau’s Adopt-A-Family project around the holidays. They also spent time volunteering in the community school, children’s museum and Albion’s Festival of the Forks.
Albion also received an honorable mention award in the one-time project category for hosting abasketball tournament for Special Olympians.
“The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has made a goal of increasing community service hours each year,” Albion Senior Associate Athletic Director Melissa Walton said.
Current SAAC President Emily DeWaters added, “It’s an honor for us to be awarded for multiple projects. It is an awesome feeling for all the athletes to help the community. To be recognized for it makes it all the more rewarding. We couldn’t have done it without the leadership from last year’s president Jalyn Ingalls.”
The NADIIIAA recognizes institutions and/or conferences for the impressive community service projects performed by their student-athletes during the academic year. This prestigious awards program is co-sponsored by Jostens and is intended to recognize the many contributions that Division III student-athletes make to their communities.
