About:

On Feb 9th, over 80 varsity winter athletes dedicated their after school time to help those who are in need of food in Rockland County. The athletes representing 5 varsity winter teams, prepared for this event by collecting canned goods and non perishables to be placed in Blessing Bags for distribution in the most impacted areas in the County. The students participated in discussion with representatives from Rockland County Better Together group about food insecurity and the serious health issues that it may cause. Conversations also centered around the choices families must make when they need money for food, healthcare and medicine and how hard that is to prioritize. It also presents problems with decision making about rent, transportation or food. Students engaged in historical perspective about how Rockland County is impacted by this crisis.

Students then went through an assembly line production of filling over 120 Blessing Bags for distribution. In addition all the students then wrote a blessing to be placed in the bag to help make someone who received the bag know that they are loved.

At the end of the event, students were made aware of other ways in which they can help the community and ideas for sock drive and toy drives were planned. Students were also given information on how they can help deliver the Blessing Bags in the future.
