About:
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW’s 373 student-athletes did more than just compete on the field, on the court, on the course, on the track, and in the pool during the 2013-14 school year. They gave back to the Wilmington community. In a big way.
The Seahawks contributed a whopping 8,570 hours of community service during the recently completed year, spending time with such projects as Habitat For Humanity, CAA Blood Drive, Miracle Field, Stop Hunger Now, Campus Move-In and reading at area elementary schools.
All while compiling a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and capturing four Colonial Athletic Association championships.
“Student-athletes at UNCW proved they can selflessly help others while excelling in the classroom and in their respective sports” said Melissa Hunt, assistant athletic director for Student-Athlete Support Services. “The hours they gave were invaluable to those who were served and the overall experience touched the lives of so many. We’re proud of the commitment our student-athletes have made to support our local community.”
The number of hours shattered the previous high of 2,046 set last year. In the last four years, UNCW’s student-athletes have contributed 1,337 hours (2010-11), 1,875 hours (2011-12), 2,046 hours (2012-13) and 8,570 hours (2013-14) for more than 13,000 hours in that span.
