About:
After the passing of one of student-athletes in the Fall of 2017, our students, staff, and community banded together to increase awareness of suicide and to try to prevent it from ever happening again in our community. The Boys and Girls soccer teams led the way in this effort by deciding to dedicate our homecoming games to Suicide Prevention Awareness. The teams sold shirts in an effort to increase awareness and participated in 3 separate events. First, we had 125 students, staff, and community members walk with the family of the student at an “Out of Darkness” event at Thompson Park in Watertown. Then the student body wore the purchased shirts a second time, on the day of our homecoming soccer games. These games were played under the lights to go along with the “Out of the Darkness” theme (since our school doesn’t have a lighted field construction lights were donated for the games by United Rentals of Watertown NY). Lastly, on the anniversary of the students passing a community vigil was held on the soccer field in honor of our lost student.
The teams went out of their way to make these events happen and raised $1250 dollars, but more importantly showed how our school and community are there for each other in times of need and raised awareness about the dangers of suicide amongst teens and young adults.
