One of the core values of the program, the Seahawks’ community service efforts resulted in over 450 service hours by the players and coaches during the semester.
“As a staff, we believe it is our job to be educators as coaches,” Coach Kristy Norton said. “We work hard to look for ways to get involved in the community and serve them. We know that UNCW prides itself in giving back and we want our young ladies to take pride in being a part of the University’s efforts to be a part of this community.
“Our players and coaches serve as ambassadors for UNCW and for the sport of softball, so we want to make a positive impact in all we do,” Coach Norton added. “The experiences our student-athletes have in serving others molds them and gives them lifelong experiences that we know will take them far after graduation.”
During the last three months, the Seahawks have been involved by volunteering with several organizations and events, including:
– UNCW Welcome Back/Move-In Day
– Color Me Rad Run
– UNCW Blood Drive
– Landfall Tennis Tournament
– Seahawks 4 the Cure: A Volleyball Tournament to Raise Money for Cancer Awareness
– Special Olympics
– I Can Do It: Helping Youth with Special Needs
– Eastern North Carolina Canned Food Drive
– Toy Drive for World Wide Orphans
– Optimist Club/Wilmington Fast Pitch Youth Softball League Christmas Tree Lot
The Seahawks will open their regular season on Friday, Feb. 13 when they host Georgetown and Saint Joseph’s as part of the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational at Boseman Field.
