About:
Volley for the cure is a community wide fundraiser that the Plattsburgh volleyball team that started 3 years ago. Each year the amount fundraised has grown tremendously. Starting out our first year with only raising $500, we knew we could do more the following year. Last year we raised $3,000, and this year we have raised $8,936.37. The athletes, coaches, and administration got together at the beginning of the season to pick a scheduled game in October to hold this event, t shirts and baked goods were sold at the door, while donations were accepted from spectators. Faculty, administration and the student body all participated in buying and selling volley for a cure t shirts. The volleyball team advertised the event on social media as well as hung up flyers around the school and had baked goods to sell during the event. On October 15th everyone who purchased a t shirt wore it during the school day, as well as to the volleyball game that evening. This event spreads awareness for a cure of breast cancer as well as bringing the community together by participating in such a family oriented event. With October being breast cancer awareness month we find it very fitting to hold this event year after year, due to the fact that the proceeds stay in the area and help the families that live here, including the families in our district. The proceeds all go to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center at the University of Vermont Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. As a coach I feel it is important to teach our young athletes/students that giving back to the community can be very rewarding. I know that each year these young athletes are excited to participate in our event.
