About:
Score for Breast Cancer shares the same tenets as Team Up 4 Community, and that is to contribute to those in need and teach our kids the importance of taking an active role in making their own community better.
Background
The South Side High School Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams wanted to make an impact within our own community this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will be wearing pink wristbands which is a wonderful gesture and symbol of support but felt compelled to up the ante. The idea was conceived just three weeks ago and was greenlit into action quickly with the help of the SSHS Athletic Director, the coaches of both teams, and of course the Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition. Truly that’s a testament to how much this community cares for one another.
How It Works
The community can pledge a donation to the RVCBCC for every goal scored or shutout recorded during the month of October by both teams. (Alternatively, we are also accepting flat donations.)
It’s an excellent way to motivate the kids even more, capitalize on their successful seasons, and unite both teams and the community.
This initiative does five things:
- Raises awareness for breast cancer
- Generates much needed funds for those battling breast cancer within Nassau County
- Rallies support for our SSHS Varsity Soccer Teams that includes a roster of hardworking, kind and compassionate kids who all know someone impacted by breast cancer.
- Teaches our kids the importance of giving back, empathy and taking action
- Spotlights the RVCBCC, an amazing local nonprofit that has helped thousands diagnosed with breast cancer in Nassau County through financial, emotional and educational support. (I myself am a breast cancer survivor and benefited tremendously from the RVCBCC.)
How It’s Being Promoted
- A website was created to collect donations/pledges: https://bit.ly/46xd2fA
- Social outreach via the Boys and Girls Instagram pages, the SSHS Booster Club and RVCBCC instagram pages and RVC Moms Facebook pages
- Announcements at home games
- Flyers throughout town (Doing that this weekend)
- The Long Island Herald is running an article that will appear in early October, with a follow up at the end of the initiative
- Banner with a QR code placed during home games
