At Team Up 4 Community, we believe in the power of young athletes to make a difference. That’s why we are proud to highlight an incredible initiative from the South Side High School Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams. Their new program, Score for Breast Cancer, mirrors our mission to support those in need while teaching kids the importance of giving back to their community.
Background
This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the South Side varsity soccer players wanted to go beyond symbolic support. Wearing pink wristbands is a meaningful gesture, but these athletes felt compelled to do more. In just three weeks, with the backing of the SSHS Athletic Director, their coaches, and the Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition (RVCBCC), they turned an idea into action. The speed and enthusiasm behind this initiative reflect the compassion and strength of the Rockville Centre community.
How It Works
The program invites community members to pledge donations to the RVCBCC for every goal scored or shutout recorded by both teams during October. Flat donations are also welcome. This creative approach not only raises funds, but also motivates the players to push harder on the field, knowing every goal or save contributes to an even greater cause.
Why It Matters
Score for Breast Cancer is more than just a fundraiser. It accomplishes five important things:
- Raises awareness for breast cancer.
- Generates vital funds for those battling the disease in Nassau County.
- Rallies support for SSHS Varsity Soccer Teams, filled with hardworking, compassionate student-athletes.
- Teaches life lessons about empathy, community service, and taking action.
- Spotlights the RVCBCC, a nonprofit providing financial, emotional, and educational support to thousands affected by breast cancer. (The initiative holds special meaning, as one organizer is a breast cancer survivor who personally benefited from RVCBCC’s support.)
Promotion & Community Engagement
To spread the word, the teams launched a donation website: Donate Here. Promotion efforts include:
- Social media outreach through team and booster club accounts, RVCBCC, and RVC Moms Facebook pages
- Announcements at home games
- Flyers distributed around town
- A feature article in the Long Island Herald this month
- A large banner with a QR code displayed at home games
A Community United
This initiative proves what’s possible when students, schools, and local organizations come together for a shared purpose. Score for Breast Cancer not only supports families in need but also empowers the next generation to understand the impact they can have in shaping a stronger, more compassionate community.
