About:
The John Jay Volleyball program proudly continued its October tradition with the annual Pink Modified Tournament—a free, community-centered event that brings local middle school teams together to play for a purpose. Varsity and JV athletes stepped up to officiate matches between Van Wyck, Wappingers JHS, Carmel, Copper Beech Lakeland Middle School, and New Rochelle Middle School, creating an uplifting atmosphere rooted in teamwork and service.
This year’s tournament carried special meaning, dedicated to Coach Maria Mahoney’s sister, breast-cancer survivor Veronica Albano. The day was filled with competitive spirit, genuine sportsmanship, and heartfelt connection—reminding everyone why this tradition matters.
Designed to support growth and inclusion, each school divides its athletes into two teams to ensure plenty of playing time. No scores are kept; instead, we track skills-based stats so the focus stays on development rather than wins. Because the event is completely free, every dollar raised is donated directly to the Miles of Hope Foundation here in the Hudson Valley. Our Varsity and JV players volunteer as officials, and our booster club helps keep costs low through concession donations—making the tournament a true win-win for athletes and the foundation.
What makes this tradition even more special is its full-circle impact: many of our current officials once played in this very tournament. Seeing them return to lead, support, and inspire others is a powerful reminder that community, compassion, and connection are at the heart of athletics. This year’s dedication made that message stronger than ever.
