About:
In recognition of Veterans Day, students at Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District participated in activities to honor the men and women who have served the country.
In Ms. Pinelli’s fourth grade class, students created posters, featuring pictures and thank-you letters to veterans. The completed posters were delivered to a nursing home in the Huntington/Dix Hills area, bringing messages of gratitude and cheer to local veterans.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Jonas’ kindergarten class celebrated the heroes in their everyday lives. Families shared photos of veterans, both in uniform and with their children or grandchildren, helping students understand that veterans are not only courageous service members, but also beloved family members, friends and neighbors in their community.
During the lesson, students discussed the photos, created patriotic crafts and wrote letters to be mailed directly to veterans, expressing their thanks.
Through these activities, Edith L. Slocum students learned the importance of honoring those who protect the country’s freedom, while finding meaningful ways to share appreciation and kindness with the veteran community.
