About:
High school athletics provide powerful opportunities for student-athletes to give back, and the Eden Prairie Eagles boys hockey program embraced that opportunity through a meaningful volunteer experience at the Chanhassen Recreation Center.
Several parents within the program were familiar with the adaptive basketball initiative—previously known as I Can Hoop—and believed it would be a great fit for the team. Having participated in similar experiences such as Miracle League baseball, they knew how impactful and enjoyable these programs could be for their sons.
Many Eden Prairie players already volunteer regularly, assisting with youth clinics and supporting the Eden Prairie Boys Basketball Association, making them comfortable working with younger athletes. With that foundation in place, the captain’s parents coordinated with the Chanhassen Rec Center staff to organize the volunteer effort as a full-team activity.
The varsity and junior varsity teams volunteered in two separate time slots, with approximately 10 players in each session. Nearly all players attended, making it a true team-wide commitment. This marked the second consecutive year the program participated, with parents providing background information beforehand so families understood the experience’s purpose and impact.
At the start of each session, Chanhassen Rec Center staff gathered the volunteers to share guidance on interacting with the athletes and creating a positive, inclusive environment. While some players were initially unsure how best to connect, that hesitation quickly turned into joy. The student-athletes found themselves laughing, encouraging, and sharing their love of the game—an experience many parents noted was just as meaningful for the volunteers as it was for the athletes.
The impact was evident throughout the session. Parents and staff alike shared positive feedback, with one parent overheard complimenting the Eden Prairie players for their thoughtful, respectful engagement with the athletes. Site staff also expressed excitement to welcome the team back for a second year, emphasizing how special it is for high school athletes to show up and participate wholeheartedly.
Moments like these reinforce a powerful truth: no matter their circumstances, everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated. By giving their time, energy, and enthusiasm, the Eden Prairie Eagles boys hockey program demonstrated that leadership extends far beyond competition—and that the greatest wins often happen through connection, compassion, and service.
