About:
More than 200 students from Shaker High School recently helped bring the joy of reading to younger learners throughout the North Colonie Central School District in celebration of National Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2.
High school students visited all six elementary schools in the district, connecting with more than 1,500 elementary students through a variety of engaging literacy activities. Students involved in the SHS Writing Center, Literature in Education classes, and the National English Honor Society led the initiative, volunteering their time to promote a love of reading among the district’s youngest learners.
During the visits, high school students hosted several interactive stations designed to make reading fun and memorable. Activities included bookmark creation, collaborative poster contributions, “story in motion” storytelling, and question-and-answer panels where elementary students could interact with their older peers.
The event provided a meaningful opportunity for high school students to step into leadership and mentorship roles while encouraging literacy and creativity among younger students. By working directly with elementary classrooms, the student volunteers helped create a positive and inspiring learning experience throughout the district.
The success of the day was made possible through the collaboration between Shaker High School and the elementary school libraries, whose coordination ensured the celebration reached students across North Colonie.
Through events like this, Shaker High School students continue to demonstrate how leadership, service, and education can come together to make a lasting impact on their school community.
