About:
The Westlake Varsity Girls Basketball program recently made a positive impact in its community by leading a basketball skills clinic for fourth- and fifth-grade students from Columbus Elementary School.
Organized with the support of varsity head coach Sean Mayer, the clinic focused on building fundamental basketball skills while fostering a fun, encouraging environment for younger athletes. Elementary students rotated through skill-development stations that emphasized individual technique, teamwork, and gameplay.
Throughout the event, Westlake players stepped into leadership and mentorship roles — demonstrating drills, offering encouragement, and helping foster confidence in the next generation of athletes. The experience not only supported youth development but also strengthened connections between the elementary and high school communities.
Youth clinics like this highlight how high school athletic programs can extend their impact beyond competition, promoting leadership, service, and school pride. By investing time in mentoring younger students, Westlake student-athletes continue to build a culture centered on giving back and inspiring future Wildcats.
