The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and its surrounding community came together on March 18 at Wellington C. Mepham High School for an inspiring display of unity and generosity for their annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, which supports pediatric cancer treatment and research.
Students, teachers, parents and local businesses joined forces to raise both funds and awareness. Dozens of participants volunteered to shave their heads in solidarity with children battling cancer, especially the honorees: senior Joseph Maroney, junior Carsyn Volpe, and Guiliana Geller, the daughter of Mepham teacher Jackie Geller.
Held in the high school gymnasium, the event was filled with enthusiasm and heartfelt moments, ultimately raising more than $62,000 for the foundation. Since 2008, the event has generated over $800,000 in total contributions.
Mepham junior Leah Weerth was the top individual fundraiser, collecting $16,074 in donations. She was followed by Mepham senior Steven Gabino, who raised $11,499, and Merrick Avenue social studies teacher Matt Chicco, who contributed $2,451. The school’s kickline squad was recognized as the top fundraising team overall.
Social studies chairperson Robyn Einbinder, along with teachers Kerry Dennis and Chris Patten, helped oversee various aspects of the event’s success. Additionally, students in Geller’s School and Community Leadership and Dennis and Patten’s Participation in Government classes volunteered as part of their senior service-learning project.
“This evening highlights the spirit and generosity of Mepham,” Dennis said. “Our community made a commitment years ago to continue the fight against childhood cancer, and this year’s event shows just how meaningful that promise remains to our students and the entire Bellmore-Merrick community.”
Seniors George Karousis, Rob Fekete and Erijon Kraki served as emcees for the evening, while freshman Kennedy Young performed the national anthem. The district’s broadcasting program documented the event and produced an on-air segment during the fundraiser.
Members of Star Wars-themed cosplay groups the 501st Legion and the Saber Guild were also in attendance, supporting the cause and offering memorable photo opportunities.
For the head-shaving portion of the event, students from the district’s cosmetology program at Calhoun High School, led by instructor Jaime Pendl, operated the clippers. Richard Rubenstein of BanGz Hair & Color Lounge also volunteered his haircutting services for the cause.
