About:
Frank P. Long Intermediate School student Colton Leest recently presented 1,500 get-well cards to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital as part of his Cards by Colton initiative. He donated the cards with the help of his classmates and teachers, all of whom contributed heartfelt messages.
This is not the first time that Leest, a fifth grader, has distributed cards. He started as a second grader after being inspired by his brother Ethan, who cannot walk or speak. Leest created the project to bring joy to children facing similar challenges.
In addition to his card project, Leest is an active member of his school community. He participates in student council and the Ambassadors Club. He also plays the piano and trumpet and has participated in NYSSMA for both instruments. In addition, he practices karate and has earned his green belt.
Leest plans to continue growing Cards by Colton and hopes to expand his efforts through additional community service projects. He said the work is meaningful to him because he enjoys seeing the smiles on children’s faces when they receive the cards.
