Cheers and patriotic signs set the scene at Pines Elementary School as students and staff welcomed local first responders for a special First Responder Day celebration, honoring those who help keep the Hauppauge community safe.
The event began with a high-energy parade around the school grounds, featuring family members and local community members who serve as first responders. Two officers rode on horseback while the remaining heroes walked the parade route in uniform, waving to students who lined the sidewalks holding handmade “thank you” signs.
Following the parade, the school community gathered behind the building for a ceremony recognizing the service of local police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel. First responders were welcomed to seats of honor at the front of the ceremony as students looked on.
The program opened with the posting of the colors by Pines Girl Scout Troop 184, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Pines Student Council President Violet Radonis. Students then joined together in a spirited performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Guest speakers Fire Commissioner Scott Munro Jr. and Hauppauge Fire Department Company Three Captain Vincent Calvanese spoke about the importance of service, teamwork and protecting the community. A special award was also given to retired U.S. Army veteran and retired New York Police Department detective, Wilbur Oberg, a 100-year-old community member.
Fifth grade students Esra Salazar and Isabella Gagliardi also shared their award-winning essays, reflecting on the role first responders play in protecting others.
The celebration gave students a meaningful opportunity to thank local first responders, leaving the school community with a deeper appreciation for the people who protect and serve every day.
