Cereal boxes dropped like dominoes at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District as a celebration of a successful food drive. Near the end of the school day on June 5, the entire student body gathered for the exciting event that is becoming an annual tradition.
Students donated 175 boxes of cereal over a two-week collection drive. It was spearheaded by a trio of fourth graders, Isabella Braun, Michaela Miskiewicz and Colette Xenakis. They brought the idea to the school last year based on a viral video trend, and worked with Principal Amanda Licci to bring it back.
The cereal boxes were lined up in the hallways, then curved into the auditorium to form an “NB” in homage to the school. Students lined the hallway and the side of the auditorium to watch the cereal boxes fall in just about 30 seconds.
All of the cereal boxes were then donated to St. John’s Bread and Life in Brooklyn, a food pantry connected with St. John’s University where Michaela’s mother, Nicole Miskiewicz, works. Giselle Nunez, communication and development associate for St. John’s Bread and Life, visited the school to talk about how the donations will help feed upwards of 2,000 children. She also presented a certificate of appreciation to Newbridge Road School. Her message to the students was simple: “You’re never too young to make a difference.”
