About:
What began as one young person’s response to an unimaginable loss has grown into a meaningful effort to bring comfort, hope, and connection to others navigating grief.
Peter’s Packages was founded by Westhampton Beach High School student-athlete Elizabeth Sultan in memory of her father, Dr. Peter Sultan, a longtime orthopedic surgeon at Peconic Bay Medical Center who died unexpectedly in July 2025. The initiative provides thoughtfully assembled care packages for children and young adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
Each Peter’s Package is tailored to the age and needs of the recipient and can include comfort items such as books, blankets, art supplies, puzzles, games, gift cards, memory journals, and other resources designed to provide support during a difficult time. Packages have been distributed through East End Hospice, area hospitals, and directly to grieving families.
The initiative was inspired by the kindness Elizabeth and her brother received following their own father’s death. By turning that support outward, Elizabeth has created a way to honor her father’s legacy while helping other young people feel less alone in their grief.
Elizabeth has also brought her school community into the effort. As a member of the Westhampton Beach varsity soccer team and winter and spring track programs, she has helped raise awareness and support for Peter’s Packages through fundraising, donation drives, and a varsity soccer game dedicated to the cause.
Her work is a powerful example of how student-athletes can use leadership, compassion, and their connection to a team and community to create lasting impact.
