West Islip Union Free School District’s athletics program is once again showing that the impact of interscholastic athletics extends far beyond the playing field by supporting childhood cancer awareness through the Tie Up for Gold initiative.
Throughout the fall athletic season, West Islip student-athletes at the middle school, junior varsity and varsity levels proudly wear gold shoelaces as a visible reminder of the children and families whose lives have been impacted by childhood cancer. The initiative gives student-athletes an opportunity to use their platform to raise awareness and show their support for a cause greater than competition.
Student-athletes, coaches and the West Islip Athletics Booster Club each contributed $3 per pair of gold shoelaces. Together, their contributions will support the Daniela Conte Foundation, a nonprofit which works to raise awareness, assist families and support the fight against childhood cancer.
The initiative reflects the values that West Islip strives to instill in its student-athletes — compassion, teamwork, community and service. By coming together for a meaningful cause, the Lions demonstrated that athletics is about more than wins and losses; it is also about using their collective platform to support others and make a positive difference.
