Colorful signs inscribed with messages of kindness lined the sidewalks at Academy Street Elementary School as the third through fifth-grade students participated in the annual Friends of Carly Fun Run this May.
The annual event, which is held in memory of former Academy student Carly LeStrange, invited students to run a 1-mile course through the surrounding community as their peers in kindergarten through second-grade cheered on. Additionally, leading up to the event each year, the school fundraises for a cause connected to Carly’s memory. This year all donations will be applied to start a “Carly LeStrange Scholarship Fund” for a graduating Bayport-Blue Point High School senior who best exemplifies Carly’s commitment to promoting the importance of kindness. The school expects the first scholarship will be given to a member of the Class of 2017.
