About:
On Saturday, May 10th, the 10th Annual Andrew Gurgitano Memorial Game took place at Silver Lake Park, as the community gathered to remember and celebrate the life of Andrew Gurgitano. The varsity baseball matchup between longtime rivals, Rye High School and the host team, carried special meaning far beyond the scoreboard.
Andrew Gurgitano, a beloved student-athlete, passed away of natural causes during the fall of his junior year in high school. Since then, this annual memorial game has served as a way to honor his memory and the values he represented—both on and off the field.
Each year, a heartfelt pre-game ceremony sets the tone for the day, highlighting Andrew’s legacy as a diligent student, a competitive pitcher, and an outstanding role model. He embodied hard work, determination, integrity, and sportsmanship—qualities that continue to inspire all who knew him.
As part of the ceremony, one senior from each school is awarded a scholarship in Andrew’s name. These recipients are chosen for exemplifying the same exceptional qualities that Andrew demonstrated throughout his life. The scholarships serve not only as a tribute to Andrew but also as a commitment to encouraging the next generation to carry forward his legacy of excellence and character.
A decade into this tradition, the Andrew Gurgitano Memorial Game remains a poignant reminder of how one life can continue to make an impact—through sport, scholarship, and community.
