Over the past two years, the teams relationship with the mayor has flourished, and he has become an incredible advocate for athletics, particularly football. Recently, he approached Coach Jason Ohnsman with the request to have some players attend a special ceremony. Without hesitation, the coach reached out to all of his JV and Varsity players, and was overwhelmed by the response – about 75% of both teams expressed their willingness to be a part of it.
With the players donning their jerseys, they gathered to honor the brave individuals who served during 9/11, as well as local police, firefighters, and EMS workers. The event was truly memorable and held deep significance for the community. As a heartfelt tribute, they concluded the ceremony with a candlelight vigil. During this moment, a father who tragically lost his son during the attack shared a poignant poem he had written.
It was a powerful and emotionally-charged event, and the teams were grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to the heroes of 9/11, as well as their local community protectors. Together with the mayor’s support, they continue to strengthen the bond between athletics and tehir community.
