About:
In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Carle Place students and staff from Cherry Lane School participated in the school’s annual JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Walk on Nov. 3. The event has been a tradition at Cherry Lane School for the past 27 years and helps raise awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes and its research.
Each year, the walk is led by the school’s PTA and Ms. Betsy Paffmann, a former Cherry Lane parent and former community engagement manager at the JDRF. Ms. Paffmann brought this cause to Cherry Lane School back when her son was a student there and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Prior to the 2023 walk, Ms. Paffmann and the PTA visited Cherry Lane classes to show a video and to talk about type 1 diabetes and the mission of the JDRF. Students then received a letter to take home which spotlighted the disease and ways to show support. This included a donation form and an online link for students and their family and friends to donate.
On Nov. 3, classes ventured outside for the annual walk during their recess periods. Cherry Lane PTA members, led by event chairperson Meaghan Smith, helped run the event. Each student received a paper shoe which was hole punched for each lap they completed around Cherry Lane School. The message was for the students to give up their own recess time to give back to kids who have type 1 diabetes.
Last year, the Cherry Lane community raised approximately $5,000 for the JDRF. Over the years, the school has raised $125,000 for the foundation. The school will continue to raise money until the end of the month.
