About:
Students and staff at Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick Union Free School District came together to celebrate inclusion, acceptance, and individuality in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.
Observed each March, World Down Syndrome Day raises awareness and celebrates individuals with Down syndrome while promoting a message of respect and belonging for all.
At Lakeside, the school community proudly wore blue and gold and embraced the tradition of rocking mismatched socks—symbolizing that differences are something to be celebrated. The simple yet powerful gesture created a fun and meaningful way for students to express support and learn about the importance of inclusion.
Through activities like this, Lakeside Elementary continues to foster a culture of kindness, understanding, and community—reminding everyone that being different is what makes each of us special.
