About:

Kindness Week began on Feb. 7 at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School. For each day of the week, first graders were given kindness challenges and each day was designated as a different spirit day.

On Monday, for the theme of Cozy Up With Kindness, students learned what they can do to be kind to their friends while they spent the day clad in cozy pajamas. Classes listened to books about friendship and watched a video teaching how kindness colors the world. The first graders also did a directed drawing of heart hands showing how you should always be kind to everyone.

Students dressed in camouflage on Tuesday for the theme of We Don’t Hide from Kindness. They learned about ways to show kindness to their family, and wrote four kindness cards to a family member, which were hidden inside their home for their family member to find.

Wednesday was Team Kindness Day, with students dressing in their favorite team gear and focusing on being kind to classmates and linked by kindness. Each first grader made a paper link for the school’s kindness chain, writing a kind act they could do for a classmate on their link. Then all the links in the chain were joined and connected it to another class chain.

Students wore crazy hair styles and socks on Thursday, and focused on how they can be kind to neighbors and people in the community. Each first grader decorated a feather and wrote an idea they had to show kindness to a neighbor or the community. The feathers were then combined to make a pair of kindness wings for Friday’s P.S. I Love You Day.

On the last day of Kindness Week, students wore purple to school for P.S. I Love You, promoting kindness and fostering a welcoming environment full of love for all. They wrote name acrostic poems about things that are special to each student. Classes spent time talking about always being kind to each other and treating others like they would want to be treated.

“The students had so much fun participating this week and they cannot wait for their next kindness challenge,” teacher Nicole Leggio said.
