About:

Our community service group is comprised of 14 teens in 6th through 12 grades. The group started off this school year with a homelessness awareness camp out which focused on raising awareness of home and food insecurity in our area.  The group held a food drive, shopped in a mock pantry and had to prepare a meal for using only those supplies. They also made “up cycled” gift bags to be sold at holiday craft fairs to benefit their chosen charity, Honor House.
Honor House is a home in Seneca Falls that serves as transitional housing for female veterans and their family in need of secure housing.  In the fall, the group spent a day working with Habitat for Humanity backfilling a foundation and sponsored, cooked and served a pancake breakfast on Veterans Day.  All proceeds going directly to Honor House.
By January the group had raised $400 for Honor House.  But, they wanted to do more, so they applied for and received a grant through the Youth Service Fund and spent 4 months planning  “A Walk for Honor”.  This was a 2-4 mile family walk down the Cayuga Seneca trail.  The event was held on June 2 and raised over $1,500.  All the proceeds from this event goes to help the Honor House program through Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County.

In total, this group of students collectively performed 200 hours of community service planning the walk, serving dinners for disaster relief, organizing food drives, restoring habitat at our local wildlife refuge and serving our veterans.
