About:
The rain did not keep Abbey Lane Elementary School students, staff and families away as the Abbey Lane Student Council hosted its first “Unplugged Night” to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation on May 30. Together, the school community raised approximately $200 for the foundation which gives back to children battling illnesses.
Led by co-advisers Vicki Bartolomeo and Lisa Wenz, the school’s student council raises money for a variety of noteworthy causes during the school year. Student council secretary, fifth grader Keira Quigley, brought up the idea of a night where families could come together and play games while giving back to others. From here, the “Unplugged Night” was born.
“The Make-A-Wish Foundation is one of my favorite charities,” said Quigley. “I really love board games and card games, coloring and bingo so I thought it would be a lot of fun to do.”
For a suggested donation of $2 a person or any donation of their choice, students and their families could join in the fun. They rotated between the cafeteria, library and gymnasium where different games were set up. Attendees colored, played card games, board games and even bingo where prizes were handed out. The games were donated by those in the school community and after the event, were donated to classrooms for indoor recess.
It was a successful evening which not only raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but allowed families to come together for a relaxing and enjoyable bonding experience.
