About:
Coram, N.Y. – For the second-straight year, the DezyStrong Classic brought the nation’s most elite bowling programs to Long Island and raised funds for a special cause.
As eighteen teams convened at Coram Country Lanes this weekend for a three-day tournament, the Adelphi University women’s bowling team collected over $5,000 in donations for cancer research.
The DezyStrong Foundation, founded by Head Coach Dennis Kearney‘s long-time friend Matt DiStefano in 2019, continues to spread DiStefano’s inspirational message of #WeGetTo since his passing from Stage 4 kidney cancer in January 2020.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of something so special to so many people,” Kearney said. “We are grateful to the DiStefano family, the DezyStrong Foundation and the NCAA programs that came in from across the nation to support Dezy’s message.”
Between the first two days of the tournament, the Panthers were a perfect 5-0 against unranked teams, and — in Saturday’s traditional competition — stunned No. 2 Vanderbilt University in a 937-919 decision.
The Brown and Gold also exceeded a 900 series against No. 17 Tulane University, but — in their closest match of the weekend — lost by the slightest 930-921 margin in Friday’s Baker format.
Adelphi ranked among the Top 10 teams in total pinfallĀ (12,083) and average pinfall (179.8) across the entire weekend.
In traditional action, Madison Mosley and Stephanie McCoy both bowled a pair of 200 games and placed 15th and 16th, respectively, with near-matching averages of 195.6 and 195.4. McCoy also had the high game against Vanderbilt with a 218.
Kristen Derr, who finished within the Top 25, rolled the single-game high for the Brown and Gold with a 222 against Bloomfield College.
The Panthers will now prep for a flight to Kenosha, Wis. and the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Classic from Nov. 11-13 at Sheridan Lanes.
