About:
The Akron Tiger Boys’ Basketball team hosted the 11th annual Jack and Joyce Silvernail Basketball Tournament in December. While the results on the court were not what the team had wanted, the results off the court were bountiful.
The tournament has served as an opportunity for the team and their families to raise funds for the Jimmy V Foundation in honor of Mr. Jack Silvernail, a former Physical Education teacher and long-time basketball coach at Akron Schools, who lost his battle with cancer several years ago. Eventually, his wife, Joyce Silvernail, succumbed to another form of the disease and the team responded by honoring her by fundraising and donating to Hearts and Hands, a service organization where Mrs. Silvernail volunteered.
With the help of Gary and Tara Sundown, the generous tournament sponsors, and proceeds from the concession stand, the Akron Tigers Boys Basketball team was able to donate $2,000 to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research and $250 to Hearts and Hands.
Tournament sponsors included Buffalo Metal Casting, Baron and Associates, Texas Refinery, Signmatic Systems, Rattles to Reading, Yogi’s, Adpro Sports, Akron Lions Club, Guys Subs, and Candy Apple Café.
“The generous donations and the hard work of our players and parents, allowed the Tigers to once again give money to the V Foundation and Hearts and Hands,” said Coach Justin Gerstung. “We are hopeful that our donations make a difference in supporting cancer research, a disease that took the lives of the Silvernails, as well as the service program that was close to Joyce’s heart.”
