About:
The Albany football community is coming together in a powerful way this fall to support Randy Shaver’s Tackle Cancer Research and Community Fund. At the upcoming Tackle Cancer event, players, coaches, and fans will join forces to raise both awareness and funds for cancer research through a variety of creative initiatives.
Apparel sales will play a big role, with proceeds from custom-designed Tackle Cancer gear going directly to the cause. The players themselves helped shape the look of the apparel, with the team captains dedicating time to designing this year’s t-shirts.
On game day, fans will also be greeted at the gates by Albany’s 9th-grade football players, who will be stationed with collection buckets to encourage donations. These same players will bring an interactive twist to halftime: holding up tackling dummies on the field so audience members can take their shot. Each attempt costs just $1 per tackle, giving the community a fun and spirited way to contribute.
Adding to the excitement, the event will feature the auction of a team-autographed football, giving one lucky fan a unique keepsake while helping drive funds toward the cause.
In total, about 30 ninth-grade players will volunteer their time throughout the evening, splitting responsibilities between gate collections and the halftime activity.
The event highlights Albany football’s commitment to service beyond the field—turning teamwork, creativity, and community spirit into meaningful support for cancer research.
