About:
More than 100 children at the Head Start program in Roosevelt will receive new pajamas and new books thanks to students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus.
The Helping Hands club, under the direction of advisers Alyssa Levine and Nicole Reiss, held its fourth annual holiday pajama and book drive. The club worked in partnership with the National Junior Honor Society to raise awareness. During the three week collection, Ames students and staff members donated 298 pairs of pajamas and 208 books.
Helping Hands members sorted the donations afterschool on Dec. 13, to personally deliver to the facility a week before Christmas. Each of the 105 children there will receive one pair of pajamas and a book. The remaining pajamas will go to a non-profit organization, the Pajama Program, to support a specific emergency need and to distribute to other children on Long Island.
“Every kids deserves to have warm pair of pajamas so they can be comfortable,” said ninth-grader Shayna La Douceur. “It’s nice to give back and know that we’re helping people have better lives.”
