About:
In total we had 27 athletes involved, 10 from Cheektowaga Central and 17 from Amherst Central.
In terms of hours, it is hard to put an exact number on that. They spent time decorating the pool and getting donations from family & friends.
The method we raised funds was via signatures. The girls got pink swim caps donated from Ad-Pro sports via ECMC. The girls then took the caps to school and had friends, family, teachers, etc. sign the cap in exchange for a donation. This in turn caused the person signing the cap to ask what it was for. They saw the pink cap, and the girls explained it was for breast cancer awareness. We also did a 50/50 during the meet. In addition, we had various items the fans could wear such as headbands, hair ties, pink ribbons, etc. which they could take for a donation.
We chose to run our “Pink the Pool” event as it was a tradition started by the former coach back in 2009. The coach at the time was diagnosed with breast cancer and fortunately made a full recovery. She then decided to start this great tradition. When I became coach in 2014 I felt it was a very important tradition and cause to continue to support. We explain to the girls that this is a disease that will likely impact them in some fashion throughout their lifetime and doing something like this transcends the sport of swimming. We work in conjunction with ECMC and all of the funds go to the ECMC Foundation which helps support the big Pink Bus which is a mobile mammogram station that visits low income areas.
Cheektowaga raised $1,013, Amherst $582 for a total of $1,595.
