About:
For several years, the AMHS Boys Varsity and JV Soccer teams have proudly participated in the Buddy Ball program, an inspiring initiative that pairs children with developmental disabilities with non-disabled “buddies” for sports activities. Held on Saturday mornings throughout the fall, the program offers seven sessions, and whenever their soccer schedule allows, the AMHS teams practice in the morning and then head over to Buddy Ball as a group.
During each session, the players are paired with a child and become their buddy for the day. The program’s goal is to give children with developmental disabilities the chance to be active, learn new skills, have fun, and experience a true sense of accomplishment. The activities are tailored to help each child succeed, and the AMHS players are there to offer guidance, encouragement, and interaction.
For the AMHS Boys Soccer team, Buddy Ball is more than just an opportunity to volunteer—it’s a chance for the athletes to step outside of their comfort zones. For many teenagers, and even adults, interacting with individuals with disabilities can feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable at first. The coaching staff sees this as an important teaching moment, helping players understand that it’s okay to face new and sometimes uncomfortable situations. The goal is to foster confidence in these interactions, encouraging the athletes to not only play soccer but to truly connect with the children they’re paired with.
Over the years, Buddy Ball has helped the AMHS players build empathy and patience while gaining a deeper understanding of working with individuals with disabilities. The program has also given them the chance to grow as individuals and teammates, instilling a sense of community and service that extends beyond the soccer field.
AMHS Boys Soccer is proud to be part of this valuable program, and they are grateful to the dedicated volunteers who make Buddy Ball possible. It has become an integral part of the team’s community involvement, offering life lessons that will stay with the players long after their time at AMHS.
