About:
One of my Varsity players Maddy Kenniff came to me at the beginning of the season and said she wanted to do a Dig Pink night so we are hosting our first Friday night against Wachonah. The team purchased t-shirts, socks, and masks all in pink to show our support for all of those who battle breast cancer. We are hosting a bake sale and all money will be donated to a Breast Cancer organization. The girls are very excited about it and I am very proud of them for taking the initiative of running with this even, especially maddy.
Maddy did all of the organizing of the event but all the girls have baked goodies that we can sell at the game.
“The reason we are doing a dig pink game tonight is because a few years back some of the girls had the pleasure of working with coach Amber Parker. We remember how the players came together that night for a cause, not just to play the game. There was a bake sale just like tonight and it seemed as though no matter the outcome of the game everyone left the gym enthusiastic to have played for something so meaningful.
The game’s proceeds will be donated to the Side Out Foundation. This foundation focuses on deeper research for stage 4 breast cancer, or metastatic breast cancer. The term ‘side out’ in volleyball means to regain control of the ball, and as described on their website “The Side-Out Foundation helps people with breast cancer regain control of their lives”(side-out.org)
Despite the month of October bringing in loads of fundraising for breast cancer, only 2-5% of the funds go to stage 4 cancer. Side Out Foundation focuses its donations on their own research and treatments for terminal breast cancer. –Maddy Kenniff”
