About:
Nassakeag Elementary School fourth-graders in Kathryn Comiskey’s class recently utilized their mathematic skills to create special treats for those who visit the Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Setauket.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the students mixed up 18 batched of Irish soda bread using a traditional recipe. For a mathematical twist, after they successfully made their first batch, Ms. Comiskey removed the one cup measuring device. The students were then challenged to make the subsequent ones using their understanding of equivalent fractions.
“The students loved problem-solving when I took away the one cup measure and they had to make the recipe,” said Ms. Comiskey.
