About:
The Bay Shore JV Boys Lacrosse team recently took part in something far bigger than competition when they participated in the LA12 Tournament against Northport on April 25 — a day dedicated to remembrance, education, and heart safety awareness.
The event honored the legacy of Louis J. Acompora, who tragically passed away on March 25, 2000, after suffering commotio cordis during his first high school lacrosse game. Commotio cordis is a rare but often fatal disruption of the heart’s rhythm caused by a sudden impact to the chest.
More than two decades later, Louis’ story continues to inspire awareness and advocacy surrounding heart safety in youth sports. Through the LA12 Foundation, his legacy has helped educate athletes, coaches, and communities about the importance of emergency preparedness, CPR, and AED access.
For the Bay Shore JV players, the tournament served as both a competitive experience and an important educational opportunity. Following the game, student-athletes participated in heart safety training and learned life-saving techniques that could one day help save a life both on and off the field.
The event reinforced the idea that athletics can be a powerful platform for education, leadership, and community impact. By participating in the tournament and embracing the importance of heart safety awareness, the Bay Shore players demonstrated maturity, compassion, and a commitment to something larger than the game itself.
Initiatives like the LA12 Tournament continue to make a meaningful impact by ensuring young athletes not only compete with passion, but also understand the importance of safety, preparedness, and supporting one another.
Through their participation, Bay Shore JV Boys Lacrosse honored Louis Acompora’s memory while helping carry forward a message that continues to save lives and strengthen communities throughout the lacrosse world and beyond.
